artist statement:
To transform relationships into artwork: the color, brushstroke, and titles of my work expressing the beauty, appreciation, and connection of people and of people to their surroundings.
To try to capture the beauty of a person or a landscape, I use slightly abstracted color with an obvious stroke. Color and stroke combine with composition to suggest the color and energy of a subject. This representation of a subject as obviously painted also suggests the time and attention I give a subject to represent that person or land as art. This appreciation extends as others view the art, connecting people to the wonderful people and places around us. The titles of the works hopefully facilitate a transitioning of viewing the work as not separate from the world, but as a way to beautifully view the world. The titles connect with the world through quotes from the subjects or from personal insights, like using a nickname, given by my Aunt Diane, for the title of the portrait of my grandmother, "Cheeto Queen."
